TECH TIPS

Dirt Jumping Bike Setups Dirt Jumping - One of the most popular adjustment styles on dirt jumpers' bikes today has to do with the handlebar positioning. Many riders are running their bars kicked way, way back (ex. Cory Nastazio). This seems to make the front wheel feel not so "sketchy". The rider's weight isn't slung over the front end as much and is instead more centered over the bike.

Another positive aspect of having tilted-back bars has to do with bar spins. When the handlebars are not at 180-degree mark, the grips have less of a chance of hitting the rider due to the offset angle of the bars. You don't want to angle the bars too far back, though, or you will lose too much control and risk looping out on every jump. Some riders won't go farther than 5 degrees past the angle of the forks, and some run their bars strictly straight up and down.

Setting up your seat height, make sure that the seat is perfectly in line with the inside of your knees when you are standing on the pedals with the cranks level. This is essential for properly pinching the seat to pull off bar spins an suicide no-handers. (tighten ingthe headset a bit more can keep the bars still while your hands are off of them. You may find that using a layback post allows you to situate the bike to make bar spins more predictable.

Seat heights on dirt jumping bikes are super low and out of the way, with the nose of the seat angled up for comfort and an easier grab during seat grab tricks like toboggans and superman seat grabs. Speaking of superman seat grabs, you don't want your cranks spinning backward when you take your feet off for any no-footer-type tricks. That's why dirt jumpers tighten their chains and bottom bracket set.

Experiment with how your bike is set up and you may be able to improve the handling more than you could ever imagine. Don't just set up your bike like the pros. Find what works for you! That's what this sport is all about.

If you sand the sides of your rim with sand paper it will get all the shit that get built up on it off, it works.
